Installation

Install HMI Forge on a FANUC controller, and confirm it came up.

Prerequisites

Section titled “Prerequisites”
  • FANUC CRX robot with tablet TP
  • Software version minimum: v9.40P/65
  • A USB stick formatted FAT32 — exFAT and NTFS are not supported

You can check your software version via Menu > Expand All > Status > Version ID.

If your software is too old, please download and install the latest AutoUpdate from the FANUC CRC website.

Windows only offers FAT32 when formatting drives of 32 GB or smaller, so a larger stick needs either a smaller replacement or a tool that can format it FAT32.

Install Steps

Section titled “Install Steps”
  1. Copy hmiforge_vX.X.X.ipl to the root of a USB stick
  2. Insert the USB stick into the UD1: port of the controller
  3. Ensure the tablet TP is enabled
  4. Navigate to Menu > Plugins > Install
  5. Select the HMI Forge plugin in the list
  6. Read and accept the End User License Agreement
  7. Click Install
  8. Cycle Power

When the robot comes back up, you will have a new HMI Forge menu beneath Menu > Plugins which contains entrypoints to the Editor and Runtime.

The first time you open the Editor or Runtime, you will be asked for a license key. See Licensing for how to obtain and enter one.

Check the install

Section titled “Check the install”

Open Menu > Plugins > HMI Forge > Editor. Once the license key is accepted, the editor opens and its top bar shows the version you installed — confirm it matches the .ipl you used.

Network

Section titled “Network”

HMI Forge is served by the controller’s built-in web server on port 80. Keep the controller on an isolated, trusted cell network. Do not expose port 80 to a plant-wide or office network, and never to the internet.

Update an existing installation

Section titled “Update an existing installation”

Follow the same steps as above. Newer versions of HMI Forge can be installed directly on top of existing versions. You may want to Backup all of your HMI Forge files before updating.

Backup HMI Forge HMIs and image assets

Section titled “Backup HMI Forge HMIs and image assets”
  1. Insert a USB stick into the UD1: port of the controller
  2. Menu > Plugins > HMI Forge > Editor
  3. Click Documents dropdown in top left corner
  4. Click the Backup button at the bottom of the screen

Your USB will now have all of your images and HMIs along with a HMI Forge backup manifest file. Tags are embedded within the HMI files themselves.
